Pelvic health for people with penises

Everyone and anyone can have pelvic floor issues

Patient Story

52 Year Old Male

“I am a 52 year old male and used to consider myself a workaholic. I had ongoing tailbone pain, incontinence issues and some sexual dysfunction. I went to see Anniken. I was feeling nervous and was not sure what to expect. We talked about what brought me to see her, how my body was feeling and what results I wanted to achieve. We also spoke about different childhood injuries, various illnesses, and various relationships. During the physical evaluation Anniken had me complete many different body movements, different body positions and answer various questions. It was by far the most in depth exam I had ever had by a health care provider in my life.

It was by far the most in depth exam I had ever had by a health care provider in my life.

During the course of my treatment I have learned a lot about pain. How I can make my pain worse, how I can make it better and how I can make it disappear. I’ve learned that pain can shift from one area of the body to another and that one day the pain can be there and the next day it can be gone. I find that pain is a tricky sort of thing to understand sometimes. Thankfully Anniken is a pro when it comes to pain. Some of the things I have learned from her are truly amazing. When I started with Anniken my pain was fairly intense and constant and now it is much less and more once in a while.

Pelvic health physio can help you

  • Improve Bladder Control

  • Reduce Pain

  • Improve Sexual Functioning

  • UNDERSTANDING penile / prostate PELVIC FLOOR ISSUES

As pelvic function is complex, you can often have a variety of symptoms relating to different areas and so definitive diagnosis is elusive. Men and other people with penises and prostates have often seen many specialist doctors without finding a specific diagnosis, and or getting resolution from treatment. Some diagnosis are more ‘syndrome’ like – where a name represents a common variety of symptoms but doesn’t necessarily offer a solid solution. Issues include:

    • Incontinence
    • Overactive bladder (urgency and frequency)
    • Post-void dribble
    • Pelvic / prostate pain
    • Coccyx pain
    • Erectile dysfunction
    • Prostate / rectal surgery
  • ASSESSment

In assessing you it’s necessary to get your whole story, so we know what the journey has been like for you, who you’ve seen, what’s worked and what hasn’t. Uncovering any other life stressors that may be contributing and your ‘go to’ coping strategies is also important. We assess your body mechanics top to toe to ensure that we don’t miss any issues that could be straining or undermining your pelvic floor function. If we do need to assess your pelvic floor, we can do an internal rectal exam which we would talk to you more about at your appointment. Alternatively we can use a real time ultrasound machine to picture your pelvic floor through an image. An internal exam is not necessarily the status quo, especially on your first visit, unless you want it.

  • TREATment

Treatment could involve; hands on manual therapy anywhere from top to toe, or local to your pelvis; exercises; education; lifestyle changes, nervous system regulation and relaxation strategies; pain education; clinical pilates for refines movement rehab.. and more. It is tailored to you and your bodies needs and preferences.
